Smelting and Refining

High technological capabilities and cost-competitiveness

The Group’s copper smelting and refining operations are conducted at the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery and the Hitachi Works of Nikko Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd., and the Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd., both of which are subsidiaries of Pan Pacific Copper.

Investments were made in facilities at the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery of Nikko Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. in order to increase productivity and cope with decreased output caused by lower-grade copper concentrates. Currently, the annual capacity of copper smelting production is 450,000 tons. In addition, the waxless permanent cathode method, first employed in Japan at the Hitachi Works in 2002, is also being introduced at the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery. With a stable and high-quality production system, the annual capacity for refined copper is 450,000 tons.

At the Tamano Smelter, operated by Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd., the annual capacity for refined copper production reached 260,000 tons (including 160,000 tons, pro rata share of capital participation by Pan Pacific Copper) in 2006, thanks to investments in increased production capacity.

The aggregate production capacity of the smelters under the control of Pan Pacific Copper and LS-Nikko Copper comes to 1.1 million tons, which is second in volume in the world.

Production bases of Pan Pacific Copper and LS-Nikko Copper are located close to the East Asian market, where copper consumption is soaring, including China, the world’s leading consumer of copper (by volume). This has prompted us to set up a system that ensures stable supplies of high-quality refined copper, with quick delivery, for customers in the region. The precious and rare metals contained in copper concentrates are recovered from the anode slime produced in the copper refining process. The Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery of Nikko Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. uses a hydro-metallurgical process for recovery of precious and rare metals ? the first equipment of its kind in Japan. Compared to the conventional pyro-metallurgical method, this process enables us to recover higher quality gold in a shorter time, at reduced cost.
