JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation

Mar Camino Begins Service as the World’s Only Copper Concentrate and Sulfuric Acid Carrier

Nippon Marine Co., Ltd. (head office: Shimbashi 5-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo; president: Eiji Ozawa; hereinafter "Nippon Marine"), a subsidiary of JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation (head office: Otemachi 2-chome, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Masanori Okada; hereinafter "JX Nippon Mining & Metals"), has commissioned the Mar Camino, a dual-purpose carrier that it built. The Mar Camino set sail for Chile from the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery on September 15.

To raise the efficiency of transport related to the export of sulfuric acid from Japan to Chile and the import of copper concentrate from Chile to Japan, the JX Nippon Mining & Metals Group employed the Cypria, a copper concentrate and sulfuric acid carrier, from February 1997. The Mar Camino was built as the successor ship to the aging Cypria, which was decommissioned in March 2009. Nippon Marine plans to have the Mar Camino transport about 220,000 tons of copper concentrate annually from Chile to Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd.’s Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery, Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd.’s Tamano Smelter, and LS-Nikko Copper Inc.’s Onsan Refinery (South Korea), as well as transport about 120,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually from the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery to Chile.

The Mar Camino is the world’s only vessel transporting sulfuric acid on its outward voyage and copper concentrate on its homeward journey, and we expect the ship will be able to help further raise the logistical efficiency of the copper business of the JX Nippon Mining & Metals Group.

The Mar Camino sets sail.

"Mar Camino" means "Sea Road." We so named our new dual-purpose carrier in the hope that we will contribute to the development of trade and exchange between Japan and Chile through the operation of the Mar Camino, just as the Silk Road contributed to the promotion of trade between East and West many years ago.
