Selecting Material Issues

Steps in Selecting Material Issues

1st Step Identifying important challenges

In accordance with the materiality principle stipulated in the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines 2006 of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), 39 important challenges were identified.

Identifying important challenges

2nd Step Prioritizing important challenges

The 39 challenges identified in the 1st step were prioritized from two perspectives: materiality in regard to our business strategies and in regard to the level of stakeholder interest.

Prioritizing important challenges

The Three Material Issues Selected, as well as their Risks and Opportunities

The JX Nippon Mining & Metals Group considered various risks and opportunities in the course of selecting material issues that should be reported to stakeholders. The three most material issues selected through the three steps described above and the risks and opportunities associated with the issues are discussed below, as well as our approaches to the issues.

Issues Risks and opportunities Approaches
Implementing initiatives regarding climate change problems
  • Growing concern and pressure from society to address the issue of global warming and to particularly bolster efforts to reduce CO2 emissions
  • Demands imposed to further reduce environmental impact through innovations in the productivity of resources and materials
The Group will systematically reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from a variety of angles in accordance with the activities of the Energy Conservation Subcommittee.
Establishing a recycling-oriented society
  • Tight demand-supply conditions in the resources market and higher resource prices stemming from the global shortage of resources and their uneven geographical distribution
  • Need to collect recycled materials and develop technologies to efficiently recover value-bearing metals from recycled materials
The challenge of recovering value-bearing metals from recycled materials is imperative to the establishment of a recycling-oriented society. The Group is promoting materials stewardship and is actively recovering metals from urban mines.
Developing environment-friendly technologies
  • Changing needs of customers and other stakeholders
  • Need to develop highly functional materials to realize resource conservation, high recyclability, and reduction of the environment impact
Based on requests received from stakeholders, the Technology Development Center plays a primary role in pursuing the development of technologies that are capable of addressing foreseeable risks in each business field.
